Fly fisherman in a misty river at dawn

A Feature Documentary

TheRiver Between

A film about the space between surviving and healing.

Guided by Montel Williams · Broken Bow, Oklahoma

It begins with veterans and first responders

But it speaks to everyone.

For anyone who has struggled to understand what comes after survival: trauma, illness, loss, violence, addiction, grief, or the feeling that their old identity no longer fits.

This is not a fishing story.

It is a story about how people find their way back to themselves.

The Premise

At Patriot Anglers, a nonprofit created to help veterans and first responders find a way forward, Montel Williams sits with those carrying the invisible weight of what they've survived as they heal, rediscover purpose, and find their place in the world again.

“The fishing is just the invitation. The healing, that's the magic.”

Our Explorations

01

What happens when the uniform comes off, but the mission never really ends?

For many veterans and first responders, trauma does not stop at home. It settles into relationships, sleep, identity, work, and the silence between people who love each other.

02

Patriot Anglers is the invitation

Not a fishing organization. A doorway back to connection. The river is not the cure. It is where the conversation can finally begin.

03

Surviving is not the same as healing

We meet people first: sharing breakfast, making each other laugh, tying flies, walking the river, cooking dinner. Only then do we understand what they carry.

Our Guides

Two guides. One purpose.

Montel Williams

The audience's guide

Montel Williams

Montel arrives ready to listen, not as the expert. A veteran advocate with a lifelong connection to invisible challenges, he helps the audience discover that Patriot Anglers is not about the catch, but the permission to be present, vulnerable, and hopeful again.

Lew Duckwall

The quiet architect of healing

Lew Duckwall

He does not tell people how to heal. He creates a place where they can. Through small acts of care — pairing guides, cooking meals, fixing rods, noticing who needs a moment — Lew makes connection possible.

The Narrative

One shared emotional journey.

A 100-minute, multicamera documentary capturing the gathering from every distance: the grandeur of the river, the dynamics of the group, and the quiet seconds when someone finally lets their guard down.

“The river does not erase what happened. It gives people room to face it differently.”

The Voices

Different wounds. Journeys that converge on the water.

A Marine who survived the 1984 U.S. Embassy bombing in Beirut and, decades later, a suicide attempt.

A Marine combat veteran and firefighter who has endured the loss of thirteen friends to suicide.

A retired Marine Lieutenant Colonel whose PTSD stayed buried for nearly twenty years.

A veteran gang enforcement officer recovering from a recent line-of-duty shooting.

An Army veteran, police officer and wellness advocate who knows trauma as responder and spouse.

An Army veteran rebuilding trust after military sexual trauma and institutional betrayal.

A Navy veteran living with years of hypervigilance after deployment to Afghanistan.

Parents, partners, friends, mentors — people still finding their way forward.
